Notes
  • In this calculator, mcg is the abbreviation for micrograms.
  • This calculator represents findings from the literature referenced below. It is important to understand that these findings may not be representative of the experience in your local healthcare system.

Equations used

SimplifiedHOSPITALScore = Hemoglobin at dischargeFactor + ActiveCancer + SodiumFactor + ElectiveAdmit + NumberAdmitsFactor + Length of stayFactor

Calculation Details and Variables
  • HemoglobinFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Hemoglobin at discharge <12 g/dL, HemoglobinFactor = 1
    • Else HemoglobinFactor = 0.
  • Equation parameters such as Active Cancer, have two or more discrete values that may be used in the calculation. The numbers in the parentheses, e.g. (0), represent the values that will be used.
  • SodiumFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Serum Sodium at Discharge <135 mEq/L, SodiumFactor = 1
    • Else SodiumFactor = 0.
  • NumberAdmitsFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Number of admissions in last year >5 number, NumberAdmitsFactor = 5
    • Else if Number of admissions in last year ≥2 number, NumberAdmitsFactor = 2
    • Else NumberAdmitsFactor = 0.
  • LOSFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Length of stay ≥5 days, LOSFactor = 2
    • Else LOSFactor = 0.
