  SOARS Score Interpretation

0 to 2 points: 1.4 to 5.9% mortality
3 to 5 points: 23.4 to 53.9% mortality
6 to 8 points: 72.5 to 100% mortality

Notes
  • This calculator represents findings from the literature referenced below. It is important to understand that these findings may not be representative of the experience in your local healthcare system.
  • SpO2 is oxygen saturation measured with subject breathing room air.
  • Mortality estimates are from the study derivation cohort.
  • SOARS: SpO2, Obesity, Age, Respiratory rate, Stroke history; BMI: body mass index; CVA: cerebrovascular accident.

Equations used

SOARSScore = SpO2Factor + BMIFactor + AgeFactor + RespiratoryRateFactor + History of CVA

Calculation Details and Variables
  • SpO2Factor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If SpO2 ≤92 %, SpO2Factor = 1
    • Else SpO2Factor = 0.
  • BMIFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If BMI >30 kg/m^2, BMIFactor = 1
    • Else BMIFactor = 0.
  • AgeFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Age ≥80 yr, AgeFactor = 4
    • Else if Age ≥70 yr, AgeFactor = 3
    • Else if Age ≥60 yr, AgeFactor = 2
    • Else if Age ≥50 yr, AgeFactor = 1
    • Else AgeFactor = 0.
  • RespiratoryRateFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Respiratory Rate >24 breaths/min, RespiratoryRateFactor = 1
    • Else RespiratoryRateFactor = 0.
  • Equation parameters such as History of CVA, have two or more discrete values that may be used in the calculation. The numbers in the parentheses, e.g. (0), represent the values that will be used.
