Notes
  • This calculator represents findings from the literature referenced below. It is important to understand that these findings may not be representative of the experience in your local healthcare system.
  • Dependency: moderate to severe dependency correlating with a Barthel Index <60.
  • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) includes heart failure, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral artery disease, and atrial fibrillation.

Equations used

Factors = (2.663 * (Age/100)2) + (0.844 / (SystolicBloodPressure/100)2) + Dependency + CVD + RenalFactor + Dyspnea + RespiratoryRateFactor + O2Factor + Confusion - 4.665
CriticalityRisk = 100 / (1 + e(-Factors))

Calculation Details and Variables
  • Equation parameters such as On Dialysis, have two or more discrete values that may be used in the calculation. The numbers in the parentheses, e.g. (0), represent the values that will be used.
  • RespiratoryRateFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Respiratory Rate >20 breaths/min RespiratoryRateFactor = 0.911
    • Else RespiratoryRateFactor = 0.
  • RenalFactor is assigned the value of 0.586 when the Serum Creatinine is >3 mg/dL or when the patient is a dialysis recipient. Otherwise, RenalFactor is assigned the value of 0.
  • O2Factor is assigned the value of 1.2 when the SpO2 is ≤93% or when the patient is On Oxygen. Otherwise, O2Factor is assigned the value of 0.
